Even more 5/8/77 stuff on Dead.net |
Blair Jackson weighs in on the LOC deal . What interested me was, not his assessment, , but the comments below . No surprise to this forum, that many disagree about its (over) high rating, but I though it interesting that I saw so many comments, picking their choice, not from a 68-74 era show, but from 78-89 era shows ! A very different take than most of us here .

Re: Even more 5/8/77 stuff on Dead.net |
Yeah, that is interesting -- he'd asked for a "representative" show, and I guess most people were picking what they saw as the best among the ones that most "represented" the band in their view, meaning the band they actually saw. ("Best" and "Most Representative" would arguably be different concepts.)
Of course, that's not what the LC was looking for. They don't care about representing the Dead or picking the Best Ever Show. The show was included because of its particular historical impact as a circulated recording, and because of the audio history it represents (e.g. a band building its fan base because of free taping, word of mouth, etc). They weren't LOOKING for "best Dead show ever" or "most representative of the Dead" or whatever.
Blair got that, of course; but yeah, when he asked for "most representative show," it's interesting that so many felt it must include Brent, etc etc. Personally I don't think you CAN have a "most representative show" of a band with such a long and varied history, but maybe that's just a cop out :-)
